Tattoo History - Wiliam Dampier
Wiliam Dampier
William Dampier, the english pirate was born in 1652 and died in 1715, was living in the golden age of piracy but he himself didn't belong to the greatest of this future. Adventuresomeness drove him out to sea and he shipped up and down the South American coasts for over twelve years and changed fronts between whoever promised him the biggest profit.
In 1691 Dampier sailed somewhere in direction of the Philippines and passed by the small island Meangis to encounter a tribe tataued natives. He bought one of them, with the promise to make him rich and to take him home afterwards, in the hope of making money with him and took him to London as a slave where he was introduced to society as Prince Giolo, the full body tattooed native from the southern pacific.
After a short time Giolo fell ill with a common disease of civilization and died.
